How Dentists Turn Income into Lasting Wealth and Exit on Their Own Terms

How Dentists Turn Income into Lasting Wealth | Jim Moore & Peter Knutson

Your practice generates income. But income isn’t wealth — and a big sale price doesn’t guarantee financial freedom.

Allworth Financial advisors Jim Moore and Peter Knutson break down the strategies dental practice owners need to keep more of what they earn, invest it wisely, and exit on their own terms. From maximizing retirement plan contributions to multi-year tax planning, this session delivers a clear, actionable roadmap — no matter where you are in your ownership journey.

From strong income to lasting freedom

The dentists who retire on their own terms aren’t necessarily the ones who earned the most. They’re the ones who built real wealth outside the practice — and made tax-smart moves during their peak earning years, before the window closed.

Attendees will walk away with a practical framework for turning practice income into durable wealth:

  • Shelter more during peak years using Cash Balance Plans and 401(k)s to defer hundreds of thousands in taxes.
  • Build wealth outside the practice so you’re never forced to sell at the wrong time or price.
  • Plan taxes across years, not just April — with Roth conversions, QCDs, and other strategies deployed before it’s too late.
  • Avoid the costly mistakes owners make when selling, so the exit reflects everything you built.
  • The result is a roadmap you can act on today, wherever you are in your ownership journey. It starts with the difference between earning well and being truly free — and it always should.

Objectives:

  • Know the difference between a high income and real wealth — and how to build both.
  • Avoid the most expensive mistakes dentists make when selling their practice.
  • Use Cash Balance Plans and 401(k)s to shelter hundreds of thousands in taxes during peak earning years.
  • Build wealth outside your practice so you’re never forced to sell.
  • Put tax-smart strategies to work — Roth conversions, QCDs, and more — before it’s too late.
